Seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
