A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing such drugs must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
