Educating a Toddler to Develop into an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Money?

Child education concept
The organization responsible for the advertisement claims that what looks like "luxury or oddity" is in fact "purposeful commitment in early-stage education".

"A household based in north London wants to find an extraordinary and experienced educator to guide their youngest child on his initial journey to turning into an British gentleman."

When reading this advertisement, you might naturally miss the phrase "initial stages" as simple figurative language.

However, it may be the most important element of this distinctive position posting, as it attempts to hire a teacher for a one-year-old.

Many of responses have already been sent in since the anonymous family published their search for the £180,000 per year tutor, who must be "a uniquely qualified person".

In recent few weeks, the advert has gained attention in the media, with many questioning why?

Innovative Idea

A tutoring expert, head and founder of a global tutoring firm, which is assisting the family in their search, explained that notwithstanding first doubt, he viewed the plan "far sighted", and "innovative".

When he met the family, he mentioned they appreciated the atypical aspect of their requirement, and how immature their son is.

But, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to get a tutor, as they had held off until their firstborn was five, and by that stage "cultural influence had by then set in".

What exactly does the family indicate by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "comprehensive", the expert replied. "The manner you eat, the manner you speak".

He said the firstborn had absorbed "very nuanced, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural ways. The family informed him they wished to avoid the same situation to happen again with their infant.

The plan: To engage a British tutor, who must speak with standard English accent, to influence the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm state the advert has initiated a broader discussion about how families perceive education, advantage and the function of cultural environment in learning.

Subtle Influence

"A great deal of the education at the outset here is kind of acquired indirectly," stated Adam.

It's by means of this subtle influence that the family are aiming the child will pick up the English characteristics they wish to instil.

The consultant explained the tutor needed to be an individual who studied at "the right kinds of schools – the same kinds of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The instructor must be the right kind of person, they'll be performing things they don't even know they're doing, simply by nature," he added.

Expense Not a Factor

The family explained to Adam the chosen tutor should preferably also have familiarity of or interest in equestrian activities, alpine skiing, creative fields and instrumental training so as to inspire the child in a diverse set of hobbies.

More than that though, he explained the family wanted the tutor to enrol the child on a selection of courses so the child would be "horseback riding and learning an instrument by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's view, helping their son develop into a "UK sophisticate" will result in achievement and create opportunities.

"For all the rights and wrongs of that, because it's certainly a social class indicator," he comments.

Yet, notwithstanding all this instruction in "Britishness", would the child pick up what is termed cultural bias from the globally influenced family he resides with anyway?

"Absolutely", said Adam. "The parents realize this could fail, but they've just taken the perspective of, 'let's give it a go and let's go as soon as we can', because the price of it is irrelevant," he said.

Impractical

A number of in the tutoring industry who express those concerns.

Another CEO, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who provides individual instructors, stated that "the process of adopting dual cultures, or indeed, becoming oneself, is something that must be lived into, not manufactured."

He explained that he had moved from Asia to the UK at the period of childhood, and had been brought up knowing and practicing two backgrounds. He progressed to study at the University of Cambridge.

The executive was the first person hailing from mainland China to be elected to the post of Financial Officer of the Cambridge Union.

"The concept that an individual can serve as a living vessel of English culture, a person who can in some way transfer the attributes of a British gentleman to a infant child, seems to me naive and unfeasible," he stated.

"In my experience, having a distinctly UK tutor from babyhood will not automatically produce the goal they desire.

"I wasn't provided with such a tutor, and however I have been lucky enough to enjoy several of the opportunities they desire for their son."

He continued: "The fact is, self-identity should not be dictated from the outside influences; it must be selected, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, English culture is something Adam hopes can be taught – and commercialized.

"I think the situation that the international society views us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
