Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
